Welcome Back

Year 7 are to be commended on the excellent way in which they have settled into Light Hall life. They certainly made the most of Tuesday, when they had the school all to themselves. I have been impressed by the way in which they have already mastered the geography of our site, as well as the very high standard of work they are producing in their lessons.

My thanks to our dedicated peer mentors who gave up the last day of their summer holiday to come in to school to support year 7. They did a wonderful job and I am sure that their kindness, courtesy, interest and understanding have contributed greatly to a very smooth transition for the newest members of our Light Hall family.

We are delighted to welcome some new members of staff this September: Miss Bennett and Miss Snell in the maths faculty, Miss MacDonagh in English, Mrs Hands-Portman, Miss Linnell and Mr Cajak in our MFL faculty, Mrs Evans, Miss Harrison, Mrs Hunter, Mr Rogers and Miss Savva in the Humanities Faculty and Miss Sturdy in Science. Our students have already made everyone feel very welcome and I am sure you will join me in wishing all our newcomers a very happy and fulfilling time with us.

We had lots of good news over the summer holiday. Our year 11s performed very well in their examinations and were justly rewarded for all the hard work they had put into their studies. They performed particularly well in the new maths and English GCSE examinations with 82% achieving the new grade 4 or above in English and 70 % achieving these grades in maths. There were some outstanding performances from individuals; Daniel P and Reedhi V each achieved 11 A/ A* grades (or their equivalent) Adam S and Sam W each achieved 10 A/A* grades and Kayleigh F, Katharine H, Jasper M and Sophie W each achieved 9 A/A* grades. Many congratulations to them and to all our year 11s. We wish them well all the very best for the future.

In addition to this, we received notification from the government that one of our bids for funds to begin the refurbishment of the Sports Hall has been successful. Work to improve the condition of the roof and external elements of the building should begin towards the end of this calendar year.

Thank you to all parents and carers for your continued support. We are looking forward to a very happy and successful academic year 2017/18. My best wishes for relaxing weekend.
