Course Overview - Important Dates

As from September 2009 GCSE Media Studies coursework for the current Year 10 students is now called Controlled Assessment. The exam board state that it has to be completed in lesson times at school under exam conditions. lThis letter gives you advance notice of these important dates. Please ensure that your son/daughter be in attendance during these especially important times.

Controlled Assessment 1:

  • Weeks beginning Mondays 23rd and 30th November, 2009.
  • (preparation for the above from Monday 16th November)

Controlled Assessment 2:

  • Weeks beginning Mondays 22nd February and 2nd March, 2010.
  • (preparation for the above from Mondays 1st and 8th February)

Controlled Assessment 3:

  • Weeks beginning Mondays 1st, 8th and 15th November, 2010.
  • (preparation for the above from Mondays 11th and 18th October)

Controlled Assessment 4:

  • Weeks beginning Mondays 28th February, 7th and 14th March, 2011.
  • (preparation for the above from Mondays 7th and 14th February, 2011).

What are the aims of the course?

To help you to: Understand a range of media texts and the ways they are read and understood by different audiences. Develop a critical awareness of media representations of individuals, groups and issues Explore and represent your own ideas by developing practical production skills

What topics will I study?
Television, film, radio, popular music, newspapers, magazines, comics and the internet.

What examination will I take?
AQA GCSE Media Studies

What is involved in the examination?
There will be a Controlled Test at the end of the course. You will know the topic several months before the exam and will be allowed to use your research as you answer 4 questions.

What coursework will I have to complete?
You will have to complete 2 assignments and a Practical Production. This makes up 60% the examination mark.

What independent study will I have to undertake?
Over half of the course is assessed on coursework, you will be expected to do a considerable amount of independent work.

What career opportunities could the course help to give me?
This course will provide a foundation for AS/A Level Media Studies. There has been an explosion in media-related jobs over the last decade, with that trend likely to continue. This course will be helpful for careers such as journalism, public relations, advertising, broadcasting, TV and film work.
