Child Development is a very popular subject in KS4. It includes the study of conception, care of the pregnant woman, birth, every aspect of child care and development and many other aspects of modern life.
The Examining body is AQA.
The Controlled assessment is 60% (20% short task, 40% Child Study).
The examination is 40%

Pre-conceptual care. Growth and development in the womb.

  • Functions of hormones and body changes in puberty – male and female menstrual cycle, fertilisation and conception.
  • Methods of contraception advantages and disadvantages, pre-conceptual care, reduction of risks STIs, smoking, alcohol, multiple births and complications, infertility and possible solutions.
  • Development of embryo and fetus, baby’s support system.

Preparing for birth.
Labour and birth.


  • Signs of pregnancy. Miscarriage, benefits of a healthy lifestyle, ante-natal care, checks in pregnancy. Role of health care workers.
  • Birth arrangements, birth plan and content.
  • Signs of labour, stages of labour, pain relief options – advantages and disadvantages, medical assistance during birth – reasons to assist birth.

Provision of a safe environment.

  • Assessment Task on SCBU.
  • Potential hazards around the home, safety provisions, personal safety, types of accidents and their causes. Simple first aid treatment. Toy safety.
  • Range of equipment and clothing needed for a baby. Factors to consider when choosing clothing and equipment.

  • Appearance of new born baby, routine checks carried out on new born baby, reflex responses of a new born baby, why babies cry, SIDS.
  • Guidance available for new parents, function of baby clinics, post natal checks, difference between post natal depression and baby blues.
  • Hygiene of baby, feeding, the importance of immunisation.

  • Environmental factors affecting child health, Symptoms of an unwell child and childhood disease, when to consult GP care of ill child at home, Coping with a sick child in hospital and the impacts on family.

  • Factors influencing social and emotional development. Links between emotional and social development – theories and stages.  Bonding, love, security, discipline.  Opportunities for socialisation, e.g. pre-school groups, nurseries, family outings, holiday.
  • Stages of play, types of play, acceptable behaviour and social skills – links to ages.
