KS4 Overview

KS4  COURSES IN DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY

In Key Stage 4 (Years 9, 10 and 11) all pupils have the opportunity to study a Design & Technology G.C.S.E. subjects in the material area of their choice. The 3 GCSE courses currently on offer are:

  • Catering
  • Product Design
  • Resistant Materials

Resistant Materials GCSE  Welsh Board GCSE
This course is designed to develop an awareness of the nature and significant importance of Design and Technology in a rapidly changing society. It enables students to develop their application of knowledge, skills and understanding of Resistant Materials within an overall design and make based approach. This course combines practical skills with an understanding of aesthetics, social and environmental issues, function and industrial practices

Product Design Welsh Board GCSE

Design and Technology in Product Design is a recently developed GCSE course within the suite of GCSE specifications offered by the WJEC. The course provides opportunities for students to apply aesthetic, moral, social, economic and industrial awareness in their design work. Students are encouraged to use a range of communication skills, including verbal, graphical, ICT and modelling skills, to help their thinking and their ability to take action in the process of designing.

Catering Welsh Board GCSE

This is a new course which offers a unique opportunity for you to develop your knowledge and extend your skills within catering in a vocational context. It will provide opportunities for you to develop your interdisciplinary skills, a range of Key Skills and your capacity for imaginative, innovative thinking, creativity and independent working.

As a GCSE it is a suitable qualification if you want a broad background in this area and wish to progress to further education. It will offer valuable preparation for entering the world of work.
Another great bonus of following this course is that there is a strong emphasis on gaining the required knowledge via  practical work thus it is ideal for someone who prefers to learn “by doing “

ASSESSMENT

Welsh board, Product Design and Resistant Materials is assessed in a 30 hour controlled assessment, worth 60% of the final grade and one final examination worth 40% of the total grade 

Catering WJEC
UNIT 2: Catering, food and the customer
One Written Paper 1¼ hours paper which will be externally set and marked. All questions are compulsory and targeted at the full range of GCSE grades.
UNIT 1: Catering skills related to food preparation and service
Controlled Task
Two practical tasks selected from a bank of six WJEC set tasks. Internally assessed using WJEC set criteria and externally moderated.
45 hours in total 60 %

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT
We are able to provide an extensive range of equipment and facilities. Folders, software and Revision Guides can be purchased through the Department.
