Subject Overview

Business studies is an extremely popular option at Light Hall School, it introduces students to the business world, empowering them to develop as commercially minded and enterprising individuals. Students will have the opportunity to develop a wide range of skills, enabling them to use business information critically, to develop arguments, to make justified decisions and to prepare them for further study and career pathways.

Studying business allows students to develop a broad understanding of  organisations and provides them with subject-specific knowledge in areas such as marketing, finance, operations, customers and technology in business.  Business studies offers something for every student and we hope that students will develop a passion for the subject; enjoying the creative aspects of marketing or solving financial problems.

We aim to develop and nurture an enthusiasm for studying business in a range of contexts.  Students will appreciate how businesses operate in a dynamic and competitive environment and develop an understanding of the interdependent nature of business functions from a local to a global perspective.

GCSE structure – Edexcel

Theme 1 Investigating small business 50% of the qualification.  You will investigate how businesses start and meet the needs of their customers.  You will then look at where a small business owner might obtain finance from before moving on to preparing a business plan to ensure the success of a business in the competitive world.

Theme 2 Building a business 50% of the qualification.  This area focusses on key functional areas of the business such as finance, human resources and operations management. You will consider the impact of technology on a business and how businesses can compete and grow in a global market place.
