Music is a powerful, unique form of communication that can change the way pupils feel, think and act. It brings together intellect and feeling and enables personal expression, reflection and emotional development.
As an integral part of culture, past and present, it helps pupils to understand themselves and relate to others, forging important links between the home, school and the wider world.
The teaching of music develops pupils’ ability to listen and appreciate a wide variety of music and to make judgements about musical quality. It encourages active involvement in different forms of music-making, both individual and communal, developing a sense of group identity and togetherness. It also increases self-discipline and creativity, aesthetic sensitivity and cultural understanding.
At Light Hall, all pupils in Years 7 and 8 study Music for one hour each week with specialist staff. The course is essentially creative and gives pupils the opportunity to learn how to listen and appreciate music and to extend their own musical interests and skills. Pupils gain skills on a wide variety of instruments, with a focus on using keyboards and their voices. They can choose to continue studying Music at GCSE in years 9, 10 and 11.
Extra-curricular music
At Light Hall, the Music Department offers a number of extra-curricular ensembles. These include a choir, jazz orchestra, ukulele band, rock band and numerous other ensembles. Practice Rooms are available for pupils to book and the department is a lively area of the school.
