Modern Foreign Languages

Guten Tag! Salut! ¡HOLA!

Welcome to the Modern Foreign Languages homepage! This section will provide you with information on all the qualifications we offer and will also give you access to valuable guidance and support material.

Learning a foreign language gives you the opportunity to gain knowledge about different cultures and customs in addition to opening doors to live and work abroad.

What career opportunities could learning a foreign language give me?

Languages are recognised as being worthwhile qualifications because they are seen as ‘difficult’ subjects. They retain a high degree of academic weight and form an essential part of the English Baccalaureate. The skills involved require excellent analytical and literacy skills. Many language students go on to study Science based subjects, Law and Journalism at University. Most large, and many medium – sized companies are either multi-national or have links with foreign firms, so languages are in demand, particularly when combined with other skills. Engineering and technical companies and financial services are increasingly recruiting people with additional language skills.

“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.❞
‒Nelson Mandela

❝Those who know nothing of foreign languages know nothing of their own.❞
‒Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Studying a foreign language will

  • enable students to communicate effectively in their studies (French or German or Spanish), through the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing
  • develop live long language learning skills, both for immediate use and prepare for further language study and use in school, higher education and employment
  • develop student awareness and understanding of the culture and identity of other countries and communities in an ever smaller global world.

Main topics covered are

  • Identity, culture and relationships
  • Local area, holiday and travel
  • School and celebrating success
  • Future aspirations, study and work
  • International and global dimension
